Michal George, classical guitarist
With postgraduate degrees in both psychology and classical guitar, Michal’s fascination with the development of the psyche is a counterpoint to his interest in music. As a result, his training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, infuses his approach to playing and teaching the guitar.
After specialising in performance and individual teaching, and completing his Bachelor of Music at Wits University, Michal studied at the prestigious Cleveland Institute of Music in the USA. There, he graduated from the Master of Music program, with top honours, including the Valedictory Prize.
Michal teaches guitar full time at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Cape Town and performs with the Stellenbosch Guitar Quartet.
Stellenbosch Guitar Quartet
Formed in 2019, the Stellenbosch Guitar Quartet has performed sold-out concerts at various festivals. The group’s 2020 Woordfees performance was described as “delivering a high-energy blend of virtuosity, evocative and sensuous lyricism and imaginative programming.” Recent performances include a sold-out concerts at the 2022 Classics for All Festival and the Johnman Concert Series.
The ensemble includes Nina Fourie-Gouws, Brent January and Marius Otto.
Describing a recent performance, Elaine Davie of the Village News wrote that, “it was the group’s virtuoso performance of Cuban Landscape with Rain by modern composer Leo Brouwer that turned out to be a musical experience of a lifetime.”
